When moderator Beth Luey wrapped things up at Archival Access Online, she pointed out that the panelists are like renaissance people; they all have:
- subject knowledge
- editorial process knowledge
- technical knowledge
But my aha moment of the night was when Luey said “As a researcher, if an archivist can only digitize one thing, I want the finding aid. What do you have?” I get so caught up thinking about the complexities involved in digitizing massive collections. When Luey started that sentence, my mind was scrambling all over the place looking for the answer – but the answer is so simple, so obvious. As I study to become an archivist or librarian, gotta learn to prioritize the needs of the user.
